Manchester United’s hopes of landing Leon Goretzka on a free transfer have been ended after the German star opted to sign a new long-term contract at Bayern Munich.

The former Schalke midfielder has been heavily linked with a switch to Old Trafford, with United keen on signing Goretzka for free at the end of his current deal in 2022.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is interested in bolstering his midfield, particularly as the club are unsure about the France international Paul Pogba’s future at the Theatre of Dreams.

Leon could fetch around £60 million on the open market and Die Roten feared losing the German star for nothing, especially in the current financial climate.

However, the 26-year-old Goretzka has ended speculation over his long-term future by signing a fresh five-year deal.

‘We’ve won everything there is to win over the past three years but what would be even better than winning titles is confirming and repeating these successes. We want to build on this in the coming years,’ said Leon.

‘The team, the club and the environment are not just highly professional, but also familiar. This mixture is one of the things that guarantees success at this club. I’m very happy to be extending my contract until 2026.’
