Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta reportedly pulled the plug on a move for Tottenham summer recruit Emerson Royal because of fears about the full-back’s suitability to his tactics.
The 22-year-old signed for Spurs on the final day of the summer transfer market, signing a five-year contract after Barcelona accepted a sum of around £26 million for his services.
However, the Athletic claim the Gunners were in advanced discussions to land the defender before he made his move to the white half of north London.
It’s stated Arsenal were on the verge of reaching an agreement with the Catalan side that would have seen Hector Bellerin return to his former club.
Hector was understandably interested in a return and Arsenal’s recruitment team were keen on bringing in Royal.
But Mikel had reservations over Emerson’s ability to adapt to his preferred tactical formation and he pulled the plug on the club’s interest.
Once Spurs received news that their city rivals had pulled out of a deal, they swooped to snap up Royal and Bellerin joined Real Betis on loan.
Arsenal spent over £150 million in the summer on the likes of Martin Odegaard, Ben White and Aaron Ramsdale.
However, the Emirates Stadium outfit have just three points from their first four games this term after beating Norwich 1-0 on Saturday.
