Martin Keown thinks Arsenal should be looking to land Wilfred Ndidi or Youri Tielemans ahead of their Leicester City teammate James Maddison.
Manager Mikel Arteta is eager to bring in Maddison this summer but the Foxes are under no pressure to cash in on one of their prized assets.
With the playmaker’s stock high after an impressive 2020-21 season, it is thought an offer of at least £70 million would be needed to even think about doing business.
Arsenal’s campaign started in abysmal fashion last week, losing 2-0 to newcomers Brentford.
Based on Friday night’s evidence, Arsenal legend Martin Keown says Arteta should be focusing on signing a player who can provide some much needed ‘steel’ to the Gunners midfield, rather than focusing on attacking zones.
And he named Belgium international Tielemans, mentioned with a move to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool this summer, as one option, along with Foxes star Ndidi.
‘The missing ingredient for Arsenal tonight was steel so I’m not sure Maddison is the player we should be going for,’ Martin told Stadium Astro.
‘If I am going to Leicester, I’m going for Tielemans or Ndidi, I’m not going for Maddison because Arsenal need that type of player first.’
