Arsenal have allegedly agreed to terms with Brighton regarding the much-anticipated transfer of Ben White for £50 million.
According to The Sun, the Englishman has agreed personal terms with the north London side and, subject to a medical, is set to pen a five-year deal to become the Gunners’ most expensive defender ever.
Manager Mikel Arteta has finally got his man after pursuing Ben for some time. Brighton rejected an initial offer of £40m for the 23-year-old last month, and also snubbed Arsenal’s follow-up offer of £45m plus bonuses.
While several other sides – including Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, Everton and Tottenham – were all heavily keen on White, Arsenal are said to be the only club to make a formal offer for him.
His career has taken off over the past campaign, with the Seagulls star a late call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England roster for Euro 2020 following a productive debut season in the Premier League.
However, after playing in friendlies versus Austria and Romania, he didn’t feature at all in the tournament.
It is still a remarkable rise for Ben, who was playing on loan at Newport County in League Two in 2018.
He was released by Southampton seven years ago and after Brighton signed him, spent much of his time out on loan.
But White broke into Graham Potter’s first team last term and shone as a right-sided centre-back.
