Arsenal showed interest in Napoli forward Andrea Petagna in the summer transfer market, according to Calciomercato.

The Serie A side purchased the 25-year-old from SPAL in January 2020 and allowed the player to remain there for the second half of last term on loan.

He has been restricted to four substitute appearances across all competitions at Napoli so far and in his last match, the attacker scored the winner in his side’s 2-1 win over Benevento.

In spite of the restricted playing time at the Naples club thus far, the website explains Gennaro Gattuso values his fellow countryman, which is why he asked his employer to land the player at the start of this year.

Mikel Arteta was looking to bring in a new striker with similar characteristics to Petagna in the last market.

However, the Italian club did not want to hear anything about the north Londoners wanting the frontman.

The report also reports Gattuso and Napoli chairman Aurelio De Laurentiis together ‘rejected’ the Gunners’ interest in Petagna.

Arsenal finished the summer transfer market without bringing in a new striker, but they bolstered their attacking division by signing Willian for free.

Elsewhere, Arsenal’s Shkodran Mustafi has reportedly told the management that he wants to leave after rejecting a new deal during the summer.

The 28-year-old’s existing contract expires next year, meaning that he’ll be free to discuss a switch to foreign clubs from January. states that Mustafi was offered a contract extension during the recent transfer market.

But turned it down and informed the club that he is keen to leave when his current contract runs out.

The centre-back is thought to favour a transfer to Serie A in order to be closer to his wife’s Albanian-Swiss family, who live in Switzerland.
