The London giants reportedly offered Marcos Alonso plus €100m in an audacious attempt to prise Romelu Lukaku away from San Siro, but the Nerazzurri swiftly rejected the offer.
Erling Haaland has been at the top of the Blues’ shortlist of attacking targets for much of this transfer window, with the German manager on the battle for a proven striker and goalscorer to mount a serious trophy challenge this coming campaign.
But Borussia Dortmund’s eye-watering £150m asking price for the 21-year-old striker has led Chelsea to instead focus their efforts on securing a return for Belgium international, who was recently on the Blues’ books from 2011 to 2014 but failed to make an impact before leaving to join Everton.
Lukaku also struggled to live up to expectations across two years with Man United but has since got his career back on track and established himself as one of the most lethal strikers in European football.
The Blues have made it clear they would be prepared to part with €100m, plus out-of-favour defender Marcos Alonso, to bring Romelu back to Chelsea, but their attempts to reach a deal have so far been unsuccessful. The report suggests Chelsea could come back with a follow-up offer for the 28-year-old striker.
It would be left up to the Belgian centre-forward to decide his future if the Nerazzurri’s demands are met before the transfer window closes.
Romelu has, though, given no indication that the striker would be prepared to force his way out of Inter Milan to seal a come back to Stamford Bridge and is happy with life in the Serie A, with just Cristiano Ronaldo outscoring him last season.
