Chelsea have handed a setback in their hopes of signing German centre-back Niklas Sule as the Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich have offered the player a new deal to stick with the club, according to Bild.

The 26-year-old star’s contract with the German outfit expires next year but they have now offered the player an extension to stay at Allianz Arena.

The west Londoners are in the market for a player at the back as there are question marks regarding the futures of Cesar Azpilicueta, Andreas Christensen, Thiago Silva and Antonio Rudiger.

All of them could become free agents come next summer and will be allowed to sign a pre-agreement with foreign sides once the transfer market opens in January.

Meanwhile, the Blues are in discussions with their current set of centre-halves to sign a fresh contract as they have been a key part of Thomas Tuchel‘s success at Chelsea.

The London club defence is currently one of the strongest in the PL, having conceded just four goals from 12 games in the ongoing season.

Thomas also revealed last week that the club is optimistic over the deals of Andreas and Antonio. The German told reporters:

“I’m very sure Toni feels how respected and what kind of an important role he plays in this club. I’m calm because Toni is calm, and the situation inside is calm. Everyone is mature. I’m happy he plays how he plays because we need him on this kind of level.

“For Andreas, everybody wants the same thing. Hopefully and obviously I expect some good news in the next few days. The situations are handled professionally from all sides, very calmly. During the process we can produce the performances we need, and that’s the most important thing.”
