Almost Done: Man Utd set to finalise transfer of Argentine defensive rock

Manchester United hope to finalise a deal for Argentine defender Lisandro Martinez today with a delegation of officials set to meet with Dutch giants, Ajax CEO Edwin van der Sar today for ‘final talks’.

The Dutch heavyweights have turned down three bids from the Red Devils for Martinez, with Ajax demanding around £46m.

Martinez is keen on to join the 20-times English champions and he’s pleaded with his team to accept an offer in the last week by making it clear that he’s prepared to go on forward to force through a move.

Ajax had hoped to spark a bidding war with the Gunners, who had also submitted two bids for the South American defender.

However, according to Dutch outlet De Telegraaf, Ajax now accept Lisandro Martinez’s future at the team is over and they’re prepared to sell.

The Red Devils last offer of around £43m was just £3m short of Ajax’s price tag for the player and the 20-times English champions are believed to be ready to meet the asking price of around £46m.

That fee satisfies both parties, with Erik ten Hag desperate for Martinez at Old Trafford.

The left-footed Argentine has mostly played at centre-back for Ajax, but he’s adept at left-back and defensive midfield.

Man Utd keeping close tabs on South American full-back

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is thinking about a move for Ajax centre-back Lisandro Martinez, claims The Telegraph.

A move for the Argentina international would be instead of a transfer of his teammate Jurrien Timber. He recently won de Joden’s player of the season award, with centre-half partner Jurrien winning ‘talent of the year’.

The same report states he would cost €30 million (£25 million), making the South American a potential bargain addition to the Red Devils’ backline.

The 24-year-old has been at Johan Cruijff ArenA since 2019. The Dutch outfit bought him from Defensa y Justicia, and the player has gone on to become an important player for the club.

He has played 74 games for the Eredivisie giants in three seasons and has represented his country at international level, where the player is expected to be part of the 2022 FIFA World Cup squad.

The aforementioned source says Erik views Lisandro as being one of the figures in his Ajax success, with the star signed as a successor for Matthijs de Ligt, who was sold to Juventus three terms ago.

The club may be more receptive to letting him go than the 20-year-old academy graduate.

Erik ten Hag ken on to sign £25.7m-rated South American defender

Manchester United are reportedly preparing to rivals Arsenal to secure the services of former Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez, to the signing of the Argentina international.

The 20-time English champions have been heavily linked with Martinez’s teammate Jurrien Timber, however, the Netherlands international has allegedly made the decision to remain with his Amsterdam team.

As a result, The Mirror claims that the Red Devils have now turned their attention to Martinez, with the defender also impressing at team level during the 2021-22 season.

The Gunners are also believed to be interested in the South American, with the North London giants allegedly having a €30m (£25.7m) bid turned down.

The Red Devils will now allegedly look to beat the Gunners to Martinez’s services, as new Red Devils head-coach Erik ten Hag looks to strengthen his defence for the 2022-23 season.

Martinez has enjoyed a fine 2021-22 campaign for his Dutch team, playing 37 games in all competitions, founding back of the net once and four assists in the process.

The defender still has more than three years left before his deal ends with the Ajax, however, Amsterdam club are believed to be open to selling him for the right price in the summer, particularly if Timber stays at the club.

Martinez has won two Eredivisie trophies and one Dutch Cup during his time with Ajax, playing 118 games for the club since arriving from Defensa y Justica in 2019.

Arsenal eyeing move for Ajax highly-rated centre-back

Arsenal have submitted a third bid for Ajax centre-back Lisandro Martinez, with the Gunners keen to finalise a deal for the Argentine as Man Utd are still circling around him.

Dutch giants have turned down two bids in the last week from the Gunners, the first of which was around £26m.

That fell significantly below Ajax’s £43m price tag for their star player and Mikel Arteta’s side followed that up with a second bid of around £34m.

Though Eredivise champions took more time to consider that offer, it was also turned down.

However, the Gunners are increasingly wary of the threat posed by the Red Devils and Erik ten Hag, who are ready to move on to other targets after agreeing on a deal to secure services of Frenkie de Jong.

The 20-times English champions have prioritised talks for De Jong in the last month, leaving the door open for Arsenal to sign Martinez.

However, they’re now ready to firm up their interest, which has prompted the Gunners to submit a third bid for the 24-year-old.

According to the Sun, Mikel Arteta’s side’s latest offer includes a similar downpayment to the second bid, however, with greater add-ons.

It stays to be seen how Ajax will respond to the offer but the Red Devils are expected to submit a rival bid of their own.

Man Utd keen on to agree deal for 24-year-old Ajax defender

Manchester United managed Erik ten Hag is reportedly becoming increasingly confident of beating Arsenal in securing the services of Ajax centre-back Lisandro Martinez.

The 24-year-old defender was a vital player for his Dutch team last campaign, founding back of the net once and providing four assists in 36 games in all competitions.

Martinez is widely expected to depart from Ajax this summer, with the Argentine defender believed to be determined to secure a switch to the English top-tier; Arsenal continue to be heavily rumoured with the centre-back, while Man United are also firmly in the hunt for his signature.

The Red Devils are believed to have recently plotted a £39.6m bid for Martinez.

According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, the 24-year-old defenders representatives have made it clear to the Ajax chiefs that he only wants to move to the Premier League this summer.

Dutch journalist Marcel van der Kraan recently said: “Martinez is very high on Erik ten Hag’s wishlist, so I expect big developments in the 24 or 48 hours,” he told De Telegraaf. “Martinez will also have his hopes pinned on United, who are an absolute top club for him.

“Ajax will really cash out for Martinez and go to €45m (£38.7m)-€50m (£43m), but that is the advantage if two clubs bid, as we saw with Lyon and Manchester United, then it suddenly goes higher.”

Martinez has made 120 appearances for Ajax since arriving in Amsterdam from Defensa y Justicia back in 2019.

Man Utd vying for services of Ajax versatile centre-back

Incoming Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag has added Ajax star Lisandro Martinez to the transfer watchlist and feels he’d be an ‘ideal’ recruit for his system, according to the latest reports.

The Dutch tactician terminated his deal with the Eredivisie giants early, opting against going on the post-season campaign in order to get a head start on his work at the Theatre of Dreams.

He will liaise heavily with the Red Devils’ existing recruitment team to plan the summer business and a new centre-half is firmly on his agenda after the team struggled defensively this term.

The English giants had been linked with a move for de Joden youngster Jurrien Timber, who Erik rates highly, but now The Telegraph state he is even more interested in signing Martinez.

The versatile Argentina international has been a cornerstone of his side’s defence under ten Hag and would be a huge help in replicating the 52-year-old manager’s philosophy and style in Manchester.

Ajax leader feels the South American has been one of the ‘keys’ to his success at Johan Cruijff ArenA and wants an immediate reunion at United.

The Old Trafford side would have a freer run at him, though his contract with the Eredivisie giants means he’d cost at least €30 million (£25 million).
