Paris Saint-Germain are preparing a shock approach for Liverpool defender Joel Matip, according to a recent report.

Matip has established himself as a key member of Jurgen Klopp’s squad, having played his part in their recent trophy successes.

But for his appalling injury record, the ex-Schalke defender would certainly figured more. Joel has missed over 60 matches over a total of eight various injuries since signing in 2016.

But in spite of making just 13 appearances in all competitions this campaign, Cameroon news outlet kick442 claims the Parisians are readying an approach.

They state PSG’s chief Leonardo sees Matip as an ideal replacement for outgoing defender Thiago Silva at the heart of the defence.

Silva and Edinson Cavani both left the French side following the expiration of their contracts. The club have already gone some way to replacing Edinson by signing Mauro Icardi on a permanent deal.

But a replacement for the Brazil international remains a priority now for Leonardo and head coach Thomas Tuchel.

Kalidou Koulibaly and Jose Gimenez have both been emerged as targets. Both, however, would likely cost in excess of £75 million.

Matip would command a sum slightly more modest fee given his injury record and a £50 million approach has been touted.

Meantime, Liverpool’s principal owner John W Henry says being part of the club’s success in the last 14 months means a personal peak for him.

“The fact that we are champions of England, champions of Europe, the Club World Cup, the Super Cup is just an extraordinary accomplishment by this organisation and by these players,” Henry told liverpoolfc.com.

“To be involved with that, to have been a part of it has really been the capstone of my career and I think all of us who have been a part of Fenway Sports Group.

“Liverpool Football Club is a family and it’s really something extraordinary to be part of.”
