Bruce Grobbelaar has said that Kylian Mbappe wouldn’t walk straight into Liverpool’s starting eleven amid speculation linking the Paris Saint-Germain forward with a move to Anfield.
Mbappe would represent a big coup for the Reds and they have reportedly thought about using one of their key players Sadio Mane as part of a deal to sign the 21-year-old ace this summer.
After the Ligue 1 campaign was cancelled in April due to the COVID-19 crisis, the world-class Frenchman picked up the golden boot award for a second consecutive campaign, further establishing himself as one of the continent’s most revered forwards.
However, even if Mbappe was to complete a surprise move to Anfield, Reds legend Grobbelaar has questioned whether he’d start ahead of star trio Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.
‘Well, if he comes to Anfield he’s going to have to prove his worth up front for sure. And that’s only if and when he comes,’ Bruce told Stats Perform News.
‘We do not know what the circumstances are. It will be up to [Jurgen] Klopp and FSG [Fenway Sports Group] who will reveal something probably in the new season.
‘But whoever comes to Anfield, as you see with [Takumi] Minamino, he’s going to have to improve a hell of a lot more to get into the side.’
The club look set to trim down their squad this summer transfer market, which could include letting the likes of midfielder Adam Lallana, defender Dejan Lovren and winger Xherdan Shaqiri leave in search of more game time.
