Liverpool are reportedly keen on signing Denis Zakaria from Borussia Monchengladbach for around £37m but may have to wait until next year to secure his services.
The holding midfielder has caught the eye of Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp, according to Bild.
But the 23-year-old is contracted to the German side until June 2022, and it’s believed that they will not be open to selling him before next summer, ahead of the final year of his deal.
It’s rumoured that the sum Monchengladbach want for the Switzerland international is likely to be around £37 million.
Liverpool, along with a host of other Premier League teams have been keen on Zakaria since last year.
He has already made just under 100 appearances for his side since joining three years ago and has 28 caps to his name at international level.
Speaking on all the interest being declared in him, he told a German outlet Bild in an interview this year how flattering it was.
The former Young Boys ace said: “The fact that other clubs are dealing with me shows that I perform well.”
The Reds have fallen under intense scrutiny for their lack of activity in this campaign’s transfer market, while their rivals such as Frank Lampard’s Chelsea have improved their squads.
A move for Denis will be well received at the club, as their 4-3 narrow win over Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United a couple of days ago showed that they still need some improvement in the defence.
But they could still make a swoop for Bayern Munich’s Thiago Alcantra who the Reds have been in negotiations with this summer.
