Liverpool and Manchester City both attempted to sign Sporting CP wonderkid Joelson Fernandes this summer transfer window, according to his father.

Eusebio Mango Fernandes, who also works as his representative, spoke to El Democrata and listed all the top European sides who have been chasing his son lately.

Besides the Reds and the Citizens, he claims that Ajax, RB Leipzig, Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus, Arsenal and Wolves were all keen on the 17-year-old world-class talent.

Regarding the interest from Manchester City, it’s said they only offered €4.5 million to sign the winger. That was not nearly enough, since Sporting CP had bids as high as €20 million, and snubbed all of them.

It seems the talks with the Anfield outfit went a little deeper. It’s reported that there were three meetings, all with the approval of manager Jurgen Klopp, who wanted the sensation to be a back-up for Sadio Mane.

The offer from the club is listed as one of the attractive projects Joelson had on the table, along with Barcelona’s and Borussia Dortmund’s. But it turns out the bid was just €3 million, and Joelson Fernandes ended up penning a three-year extension with Sporting CP in the end.

“It had to be a thoughtful decision, because my wish as a father and agent, on the day that Joelson Fernandes leaves Sporting, is to be friendly and through the big door, but not through the back door”, Eusebio Mango Fernandes told a Bissau-Guinean outlet O Democrata.
