According to a report from Nacion Futbolera, Barcelona want to land Virgil van Dijk to build the world’s best central defensive partnership.
Since Liverpool purchased van Dijk, they have become one of the best clubs in Europe and while the likes of Alisson Becker and Fabinho have also been recruited, the Dutch star has been the most influential player at the club.
It would appear as though Blaugrana want van Dijk after his exploits earned him a UCL winners’ medal at Lionel Messi’s expense last campaign.
According to reports from Spain, Messi, Jose Bartomeu and Ernesto Valverde have all agreed that what is needed for the club to succeed in Europe is the Netherlands international.
While Barcelona might want to bring in Liverpool’s prized asset, there are two factors that will see the player stay on Merseyside.
Firstly, the Reds are in a much better situation financially and in a football sense when compared to the Spanish heavyweights.
Secondly, a clause in the deal to sell the Brazilian Philippe Coutinho to Barca means that if the club want to sign a Liverpool player they have to pay the Afield outfit’ valuation of that player plus an £89m premium on top of that.
Signing Virgil before the summer of 2021 would cost Ernesto Valverde’s side at least £189 million which is certainly out of their price range.
Meantime, Manchester United have ended the Reds’ 17-match winning run and 100% start to the campaign courtesy of a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.
