According to reports carried out by the Daily Express, Manchester United are looking to tie down midfielder Ander Herrera to a brand new contract at the club.

Herrera has become a cult hero among the Manchester United faithful since his arrival to Old Trafford from Athletic Bilbao back in 2014 due to his committed performances and while the Red Devils have endured lean years over the past few seasons, the Spaniard has been a pillar of consistency for the club.

While Herrera remains a well appreciated figure at Old Trafford, the midfielder has struggled for first team football this season due to the arrival of Nemanja Matic over the summer and there were fears that he could consider leaving the club as a result – especially as his contract expires in 2018.

However, United boss Jose Mourinho is keen on keeping hold of Herrera, who is currently on a £75,000-a-week package. The Portuguese manager is said to have instructed the club to hand the ex-Real Zaragoza star a new contract.

Herrera may not be a certain starter at the moment but he is a quality player and the 28-year-old could go on to play a bigger role for the Red Devils as the season progresses.
