Manchester United are reportedly in negotiations with SL Benfica to sign the Portuguese centre-half Ruben Dias.

Ruben is regarded as one of the best young centre-backs in world football and made a great impression during his national side’s Nations League triumph this summer.

According to a Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha, as cited by Sport Witness, the Reds had scouts at the 22-year-old star’s first pre-season matches for SL Benfica on Wednesday.

The report states United have spoken to the Liga NOS club about signing the centre-half for less than his €66 million release clause this summer, but accept they’ll have to pay this amount to secure his services.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer desperately needs an established defender this summer and in spite of Dias’ age, he has already demonstrated his potential on the international stage.

The €66m buy-out clause is reasonable and should be triggered by the Reds considering his age and how he would improve an important area of weakness in Solskjaer’s team.

However, it’s also suggested in the article that Ruben is being targeted as the Red Devils are worried about losing Victor Lindelof to La Liga giants Barcelona.

It’s hard to believe that Victor will be going anywhere in the summer. He is United’s star defender and the Reds should be looking to find a partner for Sweden international to strengthen in defence, rather than replace him.

Meantime, Inter Milan are confident of spreading any payment for the Red Devils striker Romelu Lukaku over a period of three seasons, La Gazzetta dello Sport claims.

However, the transfer sum remains a sticking point in talks, with United holding out for at least £75 million whereas Inter Milan’s proposals so far have come closer to the £60 million mark.
