Paul Merson believes Manchester United should cancel their plans to sign Bruno Fernandes and make a swoop for Jack Grealish instead.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been on the hunt for a playmaker – as he prepares for life without France international Paul Pogba – and 25-year-old Sporting star Fernandes is the club’s No.1 target this January.

Negotiations have been in place for well over a week for Bruno, but Sporting and the Red Devils are yet to agree on a deal for the sought-after Portugal international.

Manchester United have also been readying moves for James Maddison, Boubakary Soumare and Jack as alternatives to Fernandes – and Merson is a huge admirer of Aston Villa man.

Grealish has caught the Red Devils’ attention after racking up seven goals and five assists this campaign, but Villa will be unwilling to part with the 24-year-old as they fight for PL survival.

However, the former Villa and England star Merson said in his Daily Star column: ‘Forget Bruno Fernandes – Manchester United should be trying to sign Jack Grealish.

‘He is one of the top ten players in the Premier League right now. He is absolutely different class and would walk into almost any other Premier League team.’

Meantime, Wolves have reportedly ended their interest in landing Birmingham City youngster and Manchester United target Jude Bellingham.

Having already established himself as a senior-team player at St Andrew’s, Jude inevitably has a growing list of admirers in the PL.

This comes as a massive boost for the Red Devils, who are said to be preparing a big-money bid for Jude.
