Ian Wright thinks Manchester United need to improve their defence if they are to stand any chance of launching a title challenge this campaign and says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should rival Manchester City for Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly.
The Red Devils have made just one signing thus far this summer following the £40m acquisition of Ajax’s Donny van de Beek.
However, Ole wants to make a further three signings as the Norwegian tactician had been keen on landing a centre forward, a right winger and a left-back.
With just three weeks left of the transfer window, United have plenty of business to conduct if they are to strengthen their squad but Ian believes they’re looking in the wrong departments and should be targeting Koulibaly instead.
‘We saw with the one signing in [Bruno] Fernandes that it all changed for Manchester United,’ Ian told Premier League Productions.
‘But for me in the defensive point of view they’re still very weak. We’re hearing City might get Koulibaly but they’ve [United] got to be going in there trying to do that, they’ve got to be trying to do that deal.’
United’s priority target is Dortmund attacker Jadon Sancho but the Germans are holding firm on their £108 million valuation of the England midfielder.
City are confident of snapping up Koulibaly but their relationship with I Partenopei is strained after difficult negotiations in 2018 for midfielder Jorginho.
The Italo-Brazilian eventually joined Chelsea after talks collapsed between the two clubs but Koulibaly is keen to join City, who are prepared to pay £80 million.
