Manchester United have joined Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool in the race to sign German striker Timo Werner, according to the latest reports.
The RB Leipzig forward player has refused to rule out a move abroad in the future, in spite of only just signing a new contract at the Bundesliga club.
The Germany international forward was long connected with a switch to Bayern Munich, but should Timo opt to leave Germany then the Reds were said to be at the front of the queue to land the 23-year-old.
However, according to the Daily Express, Ole Gunner Solskjaer, the under-pressure Red Devils boss, is believed to be eyeing up the striker to strengthen his own attacking ranks.
It is understood that Ole is keen on Werner as an alternative variant to Mario Mandzukic, who has been linked with a switch to Old Trafford from Juventus.
The Norwegian chief recently conceded that he wants to add to his team, having seen the club endured their worst start to a league term for 30 years.
“Of course, we’re looking at one or two new signings,” Ole told sports TV channel Sky Sports.
“We’re one or two players light, and we’ve said that, but if the right ones are available in January then we might do something.
“If not, these players will give everything. Of course I’m optimistic, and there are young players here who will be given loads of chances.”
The talent midfielder Angel Gomes is closing in on a fresh Manchester United deal amid interest from La Liga giants Barcelona, reports say.
The England U20 star is thought to have stepped up contract negotiations after breaking into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s senior-team plans this term.
Old Trafford fans raved about Angel in pre-season before the 19-year-old ace made his full debut versus Astana in the Europa League last month.
Now, journalist, Fabrizio Romano has claimed the 2017 Under-17 World Cup winner is “close” to agreeing on a new contract.
And last month the Manchester Evening News stated United were keen to tie down talents like Gomes, especially as Spanish club Barcelona are believed to be among his many admirers.
Dutch attacker Tahith Chong, also 19-year-old, is another starlet likely to be involved in contract discussions after also impressing Solskjaer.
And with the Manchester United board publicly insisting they’ll give Solskjaer time to develop his team, Gomes and Chong will hope to earn a decent run in the PL this season.
The Norwegian manager Solskjaer brought in 21-year-olds Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka over the summer.
And apart from £85 million England centre-half Harry Maguire, Solskjaer has so far prioritised younger stars.
Nonetheless, reports in Italy suggest Napoli star Kalidou Koulibaly will be near the top of the club’s summer list this January.
Solskjaer had a £91 million offer for the 28-year-old Senegal defender turned down in the last transfer window.
