Manchester United are willing to offer Matthijs de Ligt an escape route from Sere A side Juventus if the Dutch defender continues to struggle in Turin.

Matthijs was one of the hottest properties in European football the previous summer when he turned down a number of sides to join Bianconeri for £67.5 million after leading Ajax to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League.

However, the 20-year centre-half has failed to adapt during a difficult first campaign in Serie A and lost his place to Merih Demiral before the Turkey international was injured in January.

The 20-time English champions are said to be monitoring the situation in case Bianconeri management decide to cut their losses.

They are aware that the star’s agent Mino Raiola has a reputation for moving his clients on quickly and Matthijs could become available next summer or even sooner.

The club have plenty of options in central defence at the moment after spending £80 million on Harry Maguire last summer to play alongside Phil Jones, Eric Bailly, Axel Tuanzebe or Victor Lindelof.

However, with Chris Smalling set to move on after a campaign on loan at Roma, and Jones likely to follow him out of the club in the summer, United could be in the market for another centre-half in the next 12 months.

They are well aware of the defender’s qualities having scouted him extensively as he rose through the ranks at de Joden before making his breakthrough back in 2016.
