Arsenal have been joined by Marco Silva’s Everton in the race to land the Spanish side Getafe and Togo centre-back Djene Dakonam this summer transfer window, the latest reports from Spain say.
According to a Spanish daily sport newspaper Marca, both the Toffees and Gunners are keen on landing the player, with the Spanish club set to stand firm regarding the Togo international’s £31 million (€35 million) release clause.
Djene Dakonam was brilliant for Azulones this season, with his displays at the back going a long way in his side’s surprise attempt to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
Unfortunately for La Liga outfit, they only managed to qualify for the UEFA Europa League this campaign, which was achieved by the club securing a fifth-place finish in the Spanish top-flight.
Getafe only shipped 35 league goals this season, a total that is one less than Ernesto Valverde’s Barcelona managed, and 11 less than Real Madrid, something that the player can definitely take some credit for.
If Arsenal showed one thing this campaign, it is that they definitely need to sign defensive reinforcements this summer transfer window if they are to get back to challenging on all fronts next campaign.
Spanish boss Unai Emery’s side probably would have achieved a Top 4 finish in the EPL this year had they had a better defence, thus the club are going to need to strengthen their defensive options within the next few weeks in order to have a squad capable of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League.
