Arsenal have been dealt a major blow with the news that reported target, Orkun Kokcu, has penned a new deal with Feyenoord.
The Dutch side confirmed the 19-year-old has signed a fresh contract over in the Netherlands, with the ace putting pen to paper on a deal until 2025.
News of Kokcu’s contract will be a bitter blow for Gunners manager Mikel Arteta, who had been courting the Turkish midfielder for a number of months. Indeed, the Metro stated at the beginning of June that an offer was imminent.
However, Orkun has performed something of a U-turn it’d seem. Despite penning a new deal, it had seemed the youngster was all set and willing to leave Feyenoord.
The news is a huge boost for the Dutch outfit. Kokcu has played his part in nine goals this term, with six assists and three goals to his name in the league.
The Gunners will be concerned at seeing another transfer target fall by the wayside. In a week that has seen midfielder Matteo Guendouzi’s future come under the spotlight, Orkun might have been the ideal replacement.
Contracts can often not mean the paper they are written on. However, this certainly means that the Gunners’ chances of landing Kokcu are now over. That is unless they come up with a mammoth sum to try and tempt Feyenoord.
They have protected themselves financially while making sure they are more than likely ensuring they have got one of the top young European midfielders on their books next campaign.
