Arsenal and Manchester City will go head to head to acquire the services of Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar, according to a recent report from France.
The 22-year-old star has emerged as a target for Europe’s elite clubs thanks to his eye-catching season at the heart of Les Gones’ midfield this season.
The Frenchman has netted nine goals and won a vital penalty as the club beat Juventus on away goals to progress to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League on Friday.
Though he is contracted at Parc Olympique Lyonnais until June 2023, he may depart this summer as his side missed out on the European spots with their seventh-place finish in Ligue 1.
The club’s finances have also been hit by the COVID-19 pandemic and they may be forced to sell Houssem, who is on the shortlists of the Gunners and the Citizens, according to L’Equipe.
The report adds City manager Pep Guardiola is a big admirer of Houssem, who is believed to have an asking price of £54 million.
But the Manchester-based giants – who boast a wealth of midfield options – may choose to invest their transfer funds in other zones of the pitch.
That would hand Arsenal the advantage in the race to land Aouar’s signature, and manager Mikel Arteta is allegedly keen to strengthen his midfield options after playmaker Dani Ceballos returned to parent club Real Madrid.
But Arsenal will also face competition from Juventus for the player. The Turin club know all to well the quality Les Gones academy product possesses after facing the Ligue 1 club over two legs in the UCL.
Arsenal are allegedly determined to sign Real Madrid forward James Rodriguez this transfer market.
The 29-year-old star has only made 14 appearances for Los Blancos this term and is believed to be on his way out of the club ahead of the 2020-21 season.
Atletico Madrid were understood to be at the head of the queue for the Colombian playmaker, but according to AS, Arsenal are currently the club showing the strongest interest.
The report states that the Gunners are ‘desperate’ to bring the experienced midfielder to the Emirates Stadium in time for the 2020-21 season.
Rodriguez only featured once for Madrid in the Spanish top-flight after the lockdown period, while he was left out of the roster that travelled to face Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League on Friday night.
The former AS Monaco and Porto ace’s existing contract at the Santiago Bernabeu outfit is due to expire in the summer of 2021.
Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur are allegedly tempted to move for Ainsley Maitland-Niles after the all-around wideman was put up for sale by bitter rivals Arsenal.
In spite of the best efforts of boss Mikel Arteta, the north London side’s board are rumoured to have transfer listed the Englishman in order to raise funds.
Maitland-Niles featured 32 times for the Gunners in all competitions in 2019-20, being used a right-sided forward, at right-back and on the right of midfield.
According to The Sun, Jose Mourinho is a fan of the former England youth international’s adaptability and may launch a move this summer.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has set his sights on Ligue 1 side Marseille midfielder Morgan Sanson.
The north Londoners have made an official enquiry over the star, who could be available for £36 million.
Mikel wants a replacement for youngster Matteo Guendouzi, set to be sold for £20 million this summer.
PL rivals West Ham, Newcastle and Spurs are also after the player. Sanson’s dal is due to end in 2021.
Arteta has already snapped up Chelsea winger Willian as he rebuild his squad for next campaign.
The Arsenal chief also plans to bring on Atletico Madrid’s holding midfielder Thomas Partey.
Morgan, who turns 26 next week, is a defensive midfielder. The Gunners have enquired about how much Les Olympiens want for him.
French sports journalist Alexis Bernard states the Gunners have made an official enquiry about the Frenchman.
The Spanis head coach wants him to beef up his central midfield.
The Spaniard is set to lose Matteo, along with Uruguay midfielder Lucas Torreira, set to head back to Serie A with AC Milan.
He helped ex-Spurs chief Andre-Villas Boas’ side finish second in the French League. This qualified them for next term’s Champions League.
Guedouzi’s days at the club have been numbered since he fell out with Mikel over his sending off against Brighton.
He told the club he wanted to quit after his bust-up with the coach. Sanson had scored 20 goals in 93 league starts for his side, who signed him from fellow Ligue 1 side Montpellier back in 2017.
