Arsenal are leading the hunt to sign Villarreal centre-half Pau Torres – but will face competition from Premier League giants Manchester City and Chelsea.

The 22-year-old star has been a revelation at Villarreal this campaign and was rewarded with a new five-year deal at the start of October, having made eight appearances in La Liga.

90min understands that the Gunners have already expressed a strong interest in Pau and they’re considering making a move for the star next summer.

Torres has a release clause in his deal of between €50m and €75m, though Arsenal will be hoping to seal a deal for less.

Unai Emery’s side first caught wind of Pau after being tipped off about the young Spanish by his teammate and former Arsenal fan favourite, Santi Cazorla.

Chelsea and Manchester City are also targeting Pau as they look to make improvements to their roster next summer, but Arsenal are in pole position for his signature.

Torres has only just begun to make a serious name for himself in European football, but the 22-year-old defender was a standout player on loan at Malaga last season and is now considered as one of his country’s most exciting defensive talents.

On top of a fresh five-year contract at the Estadio de la Ceramica, he’s also been rewarded for his displays in La Liga in the 2019/20 term by being called up to Robert Moreno’s senior national team. He did not feature regularly for Spain at youth level.
