Chelsea could take advantage of defender Raphael Varane’s contract situation at the La Liga giants Real Madrid, according to a recent report.

Varane has been one of the best centre-backs in the world over the past few years, with the high point of his professional career being winning the World Cup with France two years ago.

However, his fortunes since then haven’t been as kind. Despite starting nine out of 10 league matches for Madrid so far this season, the Frenchman has struggled to display his best form.

He could become available in the coming months. His deal at Madrid expires in 2022, with no indication yet of an impending renewal.

Hence, the La Liga side may have to sell him soon to avoid losing him for nothing. That will undoubtedly put many elite clubs on alert.

Manchester United have been linked with the star recently, but according to Don Balon, it is another PL side who are considering a bid.

The report claims the Blues are eager to improve their defence, and have outlined Raphael as someone who could help them do just that.

The Blues purchased Thiago Silva as a short-term solution before the start of this term. Silva has made a positive start to his Chelsea career, but the club may be considering signing a younger upgrade on their other variants.

At 27 years of age, Raphael is still in his prime years. Hence, he’d be an optimal solution in their search for a new centre-back – even if Don Balon lists several reasons why Los Blancos are unsure about him.
