Chelsea news round-up: Diallo bid snubbed, Sancho talks opened, Lampard on James

Metz turned down bid from Chelsea for key forward last month

According to Afriquesports, Metz snubbed a £16.5 million January bid from Chelsea for the highly-rated target Habib Diallo.

The Metz forward has been in excellent form this campaign. He has scored 12 goals and picked up three assists in 24 Ligue 1 starts.

A report from the Express stated both Newcastle and Leicester were keen on the star ahead of the January transfer window but now it appears another PL club were pushing for his signature.

Afriquesports states Chelsea bid for the player. Metz, however, rejected the Blues’ advances as they were ready to allow the player to leave only in the summer.

The same report quotes Newcastle and Sevilla as others keen on the Senegal international.

The 24-year-old has helped Metz to three wins in their past six matches to move them three points clear of the relegation area, posting two goals and two assists.

The Blues may have looked at him as the club wish to add more firepower to their squad. The Blues have relied on youngster Tammy Abraham, but he has struggled with the fitness of late.

Leicester and Newcastle, meanwhile, have scoured the French market before and managed to find some productive buys.

The Foxes have added Youri Tielemans, Fousseni Diabate and Rachid Ghezzal in recent seasons while Newcastle purchased Allan Saint-Maximin and Emil Krafth from France last summer.

Meantime, Serie A side Atalanta BC reportedly plan to secure the permanent signing of Chelsea star Mario Pasalic in the summer transfer window.

Chelsea begin negotiations to bring in Bundesliga winger Jadon Sancho

Chelsea have reportedly made the concrete move in their pursuit of Jadon Sancho by opening negotiations with the star’s representatives.

The Borussia Dortmund attacker is a target for a host of elite European clubs, including Manchester United and Liverpool.

But the Blues are hopeful of persuading the 19-year-old ace on a move to Stamford Bridge, in spite of only recently confirming the signing of fellow wide player Hakim Ziyech.

France Football state (via the Mail) the Blues are keen on adding Jadon to their ranks, and Dortmund could command a club-record sum for his signature.

That would mean possible suitors eclipsing die Borussen’s current record figure of £89.5 million received for the sale of Ousmane Dembele to La Liga giants Barcelona in 2017.

Dortmund are believed to be resigned to losing Sancho this summer, whose value could yet soar further should the player play a key role for England at UEFA Euro 2020.

Sancho has impressed in the German top-flight since arriving in Germany back in 2017 from Manchester City, who are also keen on re-signing the player.

England international has already racked up a superb 13 goals and 13 assists in 20 games this season.

In spite of interest from the Premier League’s elite clubs, Chelsea hold an advantage, given Sancho is a boyhood Chelsea fan, having grown up in Camberwell, south London.

Jadon’s form has also drawn plaudits from one of the football’s superstars, PSG forward Neymar, who comes up versus Sancho this week in the UEFA Champions League.

Brazil international said: “Borussia Dortmund is a team with plenty of quality players. They have a special player, who is new but who is very good whose name is Jadon Sancho.

“Jadon is a player that I really like to watch play and he is a great player with plenty of quality.”

Lampard wanted Chelsea right-back at Championship club last campaign

Frank Lampard has admitted he tried to sign Chelsea’s Reece James on loan for the Championship club Derby County last season.

James, the 20-year-old talented full-back or holding midfielder, was on loan at Wigan Athletic last and he is currently playing right-back for the Blues under Lampard.

In an interview with his cousin Jamie Redknapp in the Daily Mail, Frank says he believes Reece will challenge Trent Alexander-Arnold as the country’s best right-back.

Frank also mentioned how he looked at signing the star while he was the head coach at Derby. “I tried to get him on loan at Derby last January,” said Frank.

James has made 20 appearances for the west Londoners this season and Lampard is full of praise.

“His delivery is too good, and when I say ‘too good’, I’m joking but I mean that we need to read what he’s doing,” said Frank.

“We need to get bodies in the box because that’s a huge asset. He’s a great kid who’s going to be a huge player for Chelsea.

“Without getting too far ahead, even though Trent (Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold) is that good, he’ll be challenging him.”

Reece James won the club’s Player of the Year award last season.

His excellent display reportedly attracted Premier League interest from elsewhere. The Mirror state Crystal Palace bid £20m for him.

The Eagles were looking for a new right-back after selling youngster Aaron Wan-Bissaka to Manchester United for £50 million. The Blues, however, rejected the fellow English club’s approach.

Reece has gone on to feature in over 20 matches for Chelsea this season. Derby had Jayden Bogle at right-back the last term.

James, however, is also capable of playing as a defensive midfielder. It’s likely the Rams targeted the player for that role.
