Chelsea reportedly believe the COVID-19 pandemic could mean they can secure the transfer of Leicester City defender Ben Chilwell for below his £85 million asking price.
The 23-year-old star is a top talent who would surely give the Blues a much-needed upgrade on the likes of Emerson Palmieri and Marcos Alonso in the left-back position next season.
The Athletic report that Ben remains one of the west Londoners’ priorities, but that he has been rated at as much as £85m by his current club.
It remains to be seen if Chelsea can persuade Leicester to sell such a key player for less than that, but it seems there is some optimism from within the club that a deal can be done for a more reasonable price, The Athletic add.
Chelsea fans will be poised to see their squad strengthened in the summer after last year’s blow of being placed under a transfer embargo.
This prevented boss Frank Lampard from replacing Eden Hazard after his switch to Real Madrid, with Chelsea relying heavily on a number of talented players.
Frank has done well to promote several promising talents from the club’s academy, but more proven players like Ben are surely also needed in the summer.
Meantime, Real Madrid are reportedly keen to secure a deal for Barcelona centre-back Xavier Mbuyamba during the next transfer market.
With the 18-year-old apparently available on a free transfer in the summer, Chelsea have been strongly linked with an approach for the Dutchman.
