Chelsea talent Ian Maatsen is set to follow fellow Blues youngster Billy Gilmour in signing a fresh long-term contract with the Premier League club.
The 17-year-old defender arrived at Stamford Bridge from the Dutch club PSV Eindhoven’s youth side the previous summer and was occasionally called up to train with Maurizio Sarri’s first team during the 2018/19 term.
Now, new Chelsea head coach Frank Lampard has followed the Italian manager by calling up the Dutchman to train with the senior team following an injury to Emerson Palmieri.
The left-back was part of the Chelsea team that travelled to Wolves at the weekend but was left out of the matchday roster.
However, with Spain international Marcos Alonso being the only available senior left-back, Ian could be in line to make his senior team debut for Chelsea in their third-round EFL Cup tie versus League Two club Grimsby Town.
The Dutch prodigy is also set to sign a new long-term deal with Chelsea, following the path of 18-year-old versatile midfielder Gilmour, according to a recent report from The Athletic.
Ian has played in four of Chelsea U23s’ six matches this campaign, helping them to three wins and picking up one assist.
With the ace standing a high chance of making his senior team debut next week, the player could be the latest in the list of youngsters Frank is putting his trust in this season.
