£30m Lille defender eager to test himself in England amid Arsenal links

Lille centre-half Gabriel Magalhaes has opened the door to a switch to the Premier League this summer, amid interest from Premier League clubs, Arsenal and Everton.

The 22-year-old star was having an impressive campaign in Ligue 1 before the season was cancelled over the coronavirus crisis.

The likes of Arsenal, Napoli and Everton in Serie A have all been mentioned with a move for the Brazilian, who is rated at around £30 million.

Mikel Arteta is believed to be on the observation post for a top centre-back with the Gunners once again having serious problems in the defensive area after consecutive losses in the Premier League.

And while Gabriel revealed that his future is yet to be decided, he is interested in a move to England or Italy.

‘It is gratifying because there are a lot of teams talking about me,’ the South American told L’Equipe.

‘Gennaro Gattuso [Napoli’s manager] likes me a lot? I don’t know, we haven’t talked.

‘On the internet, on social networks, there are a lot of things coming out. I do not know what is true. I see every day, ‘Ah Gabriel goes there, then there’.

‘But in fact, we don’t know yet where I’m going to go. Wherever I go it will be to play, to be at the top, at the highest level.

‘And above all in a team that will allow me to go to the Selecao [Brazilian national team].’

In other news, Arsenal were reportedly ready to hand Brazilian attacker Willian a £250,000 per week contract before the COVID-19 outbreak earlier this year.

The report, though, suggests that Arsenal could struggle to offer those terms in the current market because of the financial implications of the worldwide pandemic.

Chelsea on red alert as PL rivals lodge £27m bid for Ligue 1 centre-half

Tottenham Hotspur have allegedly submitted a €30m (£27m) offer for Lille star and Chelsea defensive target Gabriel Magalhaes.

The 22-year-old Brazilian’s future has been the subject of much speculation in the latest weeks, with Chelsea, Everton and Napoli among the clubs touted with an interest.

Gabriel had been in strong form for his side before the 2019-20 Ligue 1 season was brought to a close, while the star also featured in each of their six UCL group-stage fixtures.

According to Fichajes, the former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is a keen admirer of the centre-half, and the capital giants have placed a €30 million (£27m) offer on the table ahead of this summer’s transfer market.

Tottenham were reportedly only initially willing to spend €20m (£18m) on the South American but have submitted a higher bid because of the competition for his signature.

The Premier League outfit are expected to be in the market for at least one new defender this summer as experienced Belgian Jan Vertonghen prepares to move on ahead of the 2020-21 term.

Chelsea have been keen to strengthen their defence after an inconsistent campaign at Stamford Bridge at the back.

Manager Frank Lampard has yet to stumble across a winning formula in the defence.

Fikayo Tomori, Kurt Zouma, Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger have all had periods out of the squad.

After the government called time on the Ligue 1 season, it has left many clubs without financial clarity.

The abandonment of the division has provided a path for many teams to sniff out bargains in France.

Serie A giants agree to fork out £20m for Arsenal-linked defender

Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta’s desire to bolster his defence has suffered a blow after Gabriel Magalhaes reportedly agreed to sign for Napoli.

The Lille centre-half is one of several targets said to be interesting the Premier League giants ahead of the summer window.

Everton and Chelsea were also tipped for a swoop yet the French outfit have agreed a deal to sell the Brazilian, according to FootMercato.

A five-year deal worth £1.8m-a-season is said to have been agreed between the star and his new club, who will pay around £20 million for his services.

Earlier in the week, Lille manager Christophe Galtier admitted that his team are set to lose the player and fellow star Victor Osimhen.

The 22-year-old tough-tackling defender joined the Ligue 1 club from Avai in his homeland back in 2017.

Midway through last campaign, he broke into the team and has remained a regular ever-since – with Les Dogues finishing fourth in the truncated 2019/20 table.

Napoli are understood to have sealed his signature during the week with the player’s agents holding talks amid the Partenopei’s Coppa Italia triumph celebrations.

An array of possible incomings are still being eyed by Arsenal, such as Dayot Upamecano and Thiago Silva.

In the short-term, Mikel must do without Pablo Mari after the loanee was ruled out for the rest of the term with an ankle injury.

Previous reports had claimed the Gunners wanted to make the centre-half’s switch permanent, for £10m.

David Luiz is one man set to quit the club this summer, when his contract expires, with Shkodran Mustafi’s future also up in the balance.

French club will listen to proposals of €30m for Arsenal defensive target

Arsenal have allegedly been told that they must fork out €30 million (£27 million) if they want to secure the services of Lille’s central defender Gabriel Magalhaes this summer.

The centre-back has been persistently linked with a transfer away from the Ligue 1 outfit recently, with Real Madrid, Everton and Chelsea all credited with an interest.

However, according to Le 10 Sport, the Gunners are at the head of the queue for his signature, and the Brazilian could be the perfect cut-price alternative to Dayot Upamecano.

The report also states that Lille will be forced into selling at least one of their key players in order to balance the books, with Boubakary Soumare and Victor Osimhen both said to be garnering interest from clubs across Europe.

Victor has been linked with several Premier League clubs after an impressive campaign in the French top flight, and the Gunners have supposedly identified the Nigerian as a potential successor for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Gabriel turned out 34 times in all competitions during the 2019-20 campaign as Les Dogues finished fourth in Ligue 1.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are reportedly ready to negotiate fresh terms with David Luiz ahead of the next season.

With the Brazilian receiving a big-money deal at the Emirates Stadium, it has been suggested that the club will opt against triggering a one-year extension to his deal.

A return to former side Benfica has emerged as a possibility after Luiz revealed that he’d like to spend a second stint with the Portuguese giants.

However, The Telegraph states that Arsenal will give the 33-year-old star the chance to continue his career in the PL, providing that he takes a pay cut.

Chelsea still at front of queue in chase for in-demand Lille star

Real Madrid have joined the hunt for Chelsea defensive target Gabriel Magalhaes – but the Blues remain in driving seat, according to reports.

Lille man Gabriel has emerged as a target for the west Londoners after their rivals Arsenal, along with Everton, failed with January offers to bring him to the Premier League.

The Blues appear to be leading the race for the Brazilian centre-half, who played 24 times in Ligue 1 for Les Dogues this season, although there is now a powerful new competitor for his signature.

According to AS (via Sport Witness), Los Blancos are eyeing up a move for Gabriel as a possible third-choice behind Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane, after Eder Militao didn’t quite live up to expectations following a 2019 move.

The only issue for the Galacticos is that Gabriel would take up one of the non-EU spots in their roster – which they currently do not have enough of to accommodate the South American.

However, the club remain keen because the 22-year-old would be a cheaper alternative to RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano, who had been a major summer transfer target for them until now.

Gabriel is said to be valued around the €20 million bracket, whereas Upamecano’s asking price is still higher, in spite of having been reduced by one-third down to €40 million.

It is claimed that the Blues have stolen a march on Madrid, though, by entering talks behind the scenes last month – although no final agreement has yet been reached.

Arsenal considering summer offer for Ligue 1 star Gabriel Magalhaes

Arsenal are set to submit an offer for Gabriel Magalhaes, after a positive response to first enquiries with the player himself, according to reports.

Vinicius Furlan of Tretis TV states Arsenal are set to make an offer for the Brazilian star. The club already spoke to the defender to see if he wanted to join, and they received a positive answer.

The club want to make an offer quickly to avoid a bidding war. That seems unlikely, though, with a few PL clubs already in the race. Interest from Chelsea and Everton is making a bidding war almost a sure thing.

At one point, it seemed like the Toffees were wrapping up a deal for the centre-back. However, those claims died down and ESPN suggested the other two teams are still chasing the Brazilian.

As with all the recent transfer talks, the issue is Arsenal’s inability to pay a major sum. Unless the season plays to its conclusion and Arsenal qualify for the UCL, there are going to be heavy financial restrictions in the summer.

Maybe the Gunners could sweeten the deal by offering a centre-back in return. But they do not exactly have a plethora of enticing options to sell.

If the Gunners could bring him in, then Gabriel would make a strong addition. As a left-footed centre-half, he could form a good partnership with many of the club’s existing central defenders.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are keen to bring a new defensive midfielder to the club during this summer’s transfer market, according to The Mirror.

Gabriel to decide between trio of Premier League clubs including Chelsea

Lille star Gabriel Magalhaes is reportedly still making a decision about his future amid interest from a host of Premier League clubs.

Chelsea, Leicester City and Arsenal have all been linked with a move for the 22-year-old defender, who has established himself as an important member of the Lille first team this season.

Everton are said to be leading the race for his signature, though, having reportedly lodged a bid of €35m (£30.5m).

French outlet Le 10 Sport reports that Gabriel has visited the Everton facilities and met with head coach Carlo Ancelotti, but is yet to make a final decision regarding his future beyond the end of the 2019-20 season.

Gabriel’s deal at Les Dogues does not expire until the summer of 2023 and the club are also content to wait in case other offers arrive from elsewhere.

The highly-rated Brazilian central defender has made 34 appearances in all competitions this season.

Meanwhile, Chelsea may reportedly be prepared to prioritise an approach for Bayer Leverkusen star Kai Havertz during the next transfer market.

The Blues have been strongly linked with Philippe Coutinho, who will be allowed to depart Barcelona later in 2020 and is open to a return to the PL.

However, according to The Athletic, Frank Lampard remains interested in trying to agree a deal for Havertz ahead of next campaign.

The 20-year-old has enjoyed a strong season at Leverkusen, contributing nine goals and seven assists from 30 games in the Bundesliga and Europe.
