Arsenal transfer blow as Ligue 1 club confirm signing of Brazil U23 talent

Lyon have confirmed the landing of Bruno Guimaraes from Athletico-PR, ending Arsenal’s hopes of landing the Brazil U23 international midfielder.

The Ligue 1 club have paid €20 million (£17 million) to land the 22-year-old, who has penned a four-and-a-half-year deal through to the summer of 2024.

The deal also includes a clause that will see les Gones pay Athletico Paranaense 20% of the profit on any future transfer.

Bruno is currently with the Brazil U-23 roster for the South American Olympic qualifiers in South America but will link up with his new team-mates after the tournament’s conclusion on February 10 or 11.

That means Bruno could make his Lyon debut in the Ligue 1 match at home to Strasbourg on February 15.

Speaking about the deal, he said: “I’m very happy, I can’t wait to start playing, to meet my teammates and my coach. I am impatient but also very happy to get started in this new stage of my life.

“It is a great career opportunity that has been offered to me. I am very happy that the club trusts me. The whole club and all the staff have shown a lot of interest. Lyon is a great team.

“My goals are to win titles and help the team upon my arrival. I must live up to this responsibility and the investment that has been made in me. So my goal is to win titles and write my name in the history of the club.”

News of the deal is likely to be a blow to the Gunners, who were also heavily linked with a swoop for the young midfielder. Techincal director Edu was desperate to sign the South American prodigy for Arsenal.

Arsenal-linked Guimaraes confirms ‘clubs are in talks’ as he eyes Europe move

Arsenal midfield target Bruno Guimaraes has spoken out for the first time on speculation connecting him with a January move to the PL.

The Brazilian midfielder has appeared as a target for Arsenal, who are looking to bolster Mikel Arteta’s roster this month as he bids to challenge for a Top 4 spot.

Guimaraes has developed into an important player for Athletico Paranaense since joining the Brazilian side in 2018 and is valued at £21 million.

Last week, it was reported that Gunners’ technical director Edu was due to hold talks in the capital with representatives of Guimaraes, and now the Brazilian has responded to the transfer speculations.

Bruno told SporTV: ‘What I asked my agents was that the transfer is good for me and for Athletico Paranaense. I know that clubs are in talks… it’s difficult to choose. They are all great teams.’

As well as targeting Bruno, Arsenal have also been heavily linked with a January swoop for Ligue 1 giants PSG defender Layvin Kurzawa.

Responding to the Gunners’ interest in Kurzawa, the Parisians’ sporting director Leonardo said: ‘For the moment we have not had any discussions with Arsenal.’

PSG head coach Thomas Tuchel, meanwhile, added: ‘I haven’t spoken with Layvin or anyone else about his departure this winter.

‘Layvin is number two behind [Juan] Bernat in the left-back position. ‘We need him and he has played well recently.’

In other news, Arsenal are also interested in signing Jerome Boateng on loan deal from Bayern Munich but face stiff competition from Serie A side Milan.

Athletico-PR chairman reveals Arsenal interest in 22-year-old midfielder

Athletico Paranaense chairman Mario Celso Petraglia has confirmed that Arsenal are keen on signing Bruno Guimaraes.

Reports last month stated that Arsenal and Chelsea are battling it out to land Guimaraes and scouts have been deployed to Brazil to watch the 22-year-old holding midfielder in action.

Both London clubs are on the observation post for midfield reinforcements and the feedback the club have received on Guimaraes has been extremely positive.

However, the PL duo will have to see off competition from SL Benfica for the Brazil Under-23 international.

Athletico Paranaense president Petraglia has revealed that the club received an offer from Benfica for Bruno over the weekend.

‘Yes it’s true. Yesterday came the official offer from Benfica to sign Bruno Guimaraes,’ Mario told Portuguese outlet O Jogo.

‘Let’s study Benfica’s offer. On Monday we will meet the club board to assess this situation.’

While the Gunners are yet to lodge a bid for Guimaraes, Petraglia believes the north London side could make an offer for the midfielder ahead of the summer transfer market.

‘Arsenal are interested, but will only make an offer towards the end of the season,’ Mario added.

It’s understood the Gunners are prioritising a move for a central defender this month after Calum Chambers was ruled out for the rest of the campaign with a serious knee injury.

Mikel Arteta has confirmed that he is keen to strengthen his defensive options and Nathan Ake, Jerome Boateng and Dayot Upamecano have all been linked in recent weeks.

Arsenal chief set to meet entourages of Athletico-PR starlet valued at £21m

Arsenal chief Edu is due to hold talks in London with agents of Bruno Guimaraes, the reports say.

The Brazilian holding midfielder has emerged as a January transfer target for the north London giants, but Athletico Paranaense are holding out for a sum in the region on £21 million.

The Gunners have only limited funds to work with in the current market and are already eyeing a cut-price deal for Paris Saint-Germain defender Layvin Kurzawa.

The likes of Benfica, Chelsea and Atletico Madrid, according to Goal, are also keen on Bruno but Edu is hoping to utilise his Brazilian contacts and snare one of Brazilian football’s most highly-rated talents.

Edu, who returned to his former club in the summer after a spell with the Brazil national team, played a pivotal role in the close season, as the Gunners stole in to sign teenage sensation Gabriel Martinelli, ahead of the likes of Manchester United and Barcelona.

Arsenal are yet to submit a formal offer for the 22-year-old Bruno, but Benfica had an opening offer of €20m snubbed out of hand earlier this week.

New manager Mikel Arteta has convinced Granit Xhaka to perform a U-turn after it appeared as though the ex-Arsenal captain had his heart set on a transfer to Hertha Berlin this month, while Lucas Torreira has arguably been the club’s most consistent performer since the former Manchester City No.2 was appointed as Unai Emery’s permanent replacement.

Despite those encouraging signs, Arsenal remain short of midfield variants and are in the midst of a defensive injury crisis.

Brazilian club ready to accept £21m offer for Arsenal-linked Guimaraes

Athletico Paranaense have told Arsenal they are willing to accept a £21 million (€25 million) transfer offer for Bruno Guimaraes, according to a recent report.

The 22-year-old is being tipped for big things in his homeland, with Premier League duo Arsenal and Chelsea chasing the signature of the defensive midfielder.

Arsenal have already approached Athletico, as club president Mario Celso Petraglia confirmed this week Arsenal were keen to sign Guimaraes.

Athletico were holding out for closer to £26 million, but Goal claim the Brazilian side have now told interested parties they are prepared to sanction a £21 million transfer.

That figure would buy 80 per cent of the star’s economic rights, although Arsenal will be aware third-party ownership is banned in the PL.

Athletico have had a verbal agreement with SL Benfica since last year, but the Gunners could yet hijack the deal if talks with Liga NOS giants drag on.

‘Yes it’s true. Yesterday came the official offer from Benfica to sign Bruno Guimaraes,’ Athletico owner Petraglia told Portuguese outlet O Jogo.

‘Let’s study Benfica’s offer. On Monday we will meet the club board to assess this situation.’

‘Arsenal are interested, but will only make an offer towards the end of the season,’ Mario added.

Guimaraes would like to make a move this month, rather than wait until the summer to join a new club.

Borussia Dortmund are also touted with an interest in Guimaraes, who is on international duty with his country’s Under 23’s at the CONMEBOL Pre-Olympic tournament this month.

Mikel Arteta wants to land a midfielder and defender this month, but Arsenal are prioritising loan transfers due to financial restrictions.

Arsenal keen on securing signature of key Athletico-PR midfielder

Arsenal and Chelsea are both interested in landing Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, the latest reports say. The 22-year-old is a rising star in his homeland and has previously been linked with a transfer to London.

Delegations from Chelsea and Arsenal have watched Guimaraes in action for his side Athletico Paranaense and the Daily Mail claim the Premier League duo are weighing up launching a move.

Arsenal could be about to lose Switzerland international Granit Xhaka after their former captain agreed to personal terms with Hertha Berlin.

Xhaka’s entourage made a public plea to Arsenal to facilitate his departure in January, although Arteta inits he wants the Swiss midfielder to stay.

‘What I can say internally we will have to face that situation,’ Arteta said about Granit’s possible departure. ‘And we’ll handle that with all the senior people in the directors area.’

While Gunners assess replacements for Xhaka, Chelsea were tracking Guimaraes before the club were hit with a transfer ban.

The Blues were successful in their appeal against their ban and are now permitted to land new players in January. Frank Lampard reportedly has a £150 million transfer kitty and could use some of that money to sign Guimaraes.

Brazilian side Athletico Paranaense can name their price for Bruno, as he is under contract at the club until 2023.

In other news, Liverpool and Chelsea are reportedly among the sides keeping tabs on 17-year-old Carlisle United ace and Arsenal transfer target Jarrad Branthwaite.

The youngster has broken into the Carlisle senior team this season, making 10 appearances in all competitions as the League Two side battle against relegation from the Football League.

Chelsea cast eye on 21-year-old Athletico-PR sensation

Chelsea reportedly sent some of their delegations to keep an eye on 21-year-old Brazilian defensive midfielder Bruno Guimaraes recently, as they apparently eye up a move for the player.

According to a report from Globo Esporte, via the Sun, Chelsea sent scouts to watch the South American prodigy in his side’s Copa Do Brasil final 1st leg earlier today.

The report notes that if the Blues want to sign Guimaraes, they will have to fork out £36 million, as that’s the total of his exit clause, however it seems like the club could face a battle in the race to land the player, as Napoli, Inter Milan, LOSC Lille and Shakhtar are all in the hunt for him as well.

Guimaraes would be a decent acquisition for Chelsea, however the experts and fans not too sure they should be paying so much for a star who’s vastly inexperienced in terms of European football.

The player has played in his home country for his entire professional career, making 72 first-team matches for Athletico Paranaense.

During this time period, the 21-year-old star has scored seven and assisted four for the Brazilian top-flight Serie A outfit, a decent return for a player who has been made to play in defence on more than one time.

Obviously, any potential move for the South American in January depends on whether the club can get their transfer embargo cut short, something that means they’ll be able to bring stars in during the winter window.

The Sun note that the west London outfit are confident they’ll be able to be active during the January market, thus it seems things are looking somewhat positive in their pursuit of Bruno.

£36m-rated ace impresses Chelsea scout in Brazilian Serie A match

Athletico Paranaense ace Bruno Guimaraes netted in front of a Chelsea scout in action for his side in the Copa do Brasil this week, reports say.

The Brazilian is a rising star in his homeland and not only and his release clause currently stands at £36m.

According to a recent report from Globo Esporte, the Blues had eyes in the Athletico box when the club took on Internacional.

The 21-year-old midfielder was the difference in the first match of the final, producing a confident finish in the 58th minute after a slick one-two.

The Blues have scouted Guimaraes five times ahead of a swoop for the defensive midfielder.

‘The interest of other teams, I see that it’s normal when the person has been playing well,’ Bruno said after the game.

‘I leave that in the hands of my agents. I’m happy at Athletico and focused on the final.’

Chelsea will face heavy competition from Shakhtar Donetsk, LOSC Lille and Italian duo Inter Milan and Napoli for Bruno’s signature, but the Blues are not currently able to put forward any proposal to land the youngster.

A transfer ban is still in place and although the west Londoners are hopeful it may be reduced, Frank Lampard cannot make any new acquisitions until next summer.

In other news, according to the Daily Star, Fenerbahce are unwilling to meet Victor Moses’s £75,000-a-week wage demands, while the Turkish club are also not prepared to pay the transfer sum required to sign him outright.
